Ways to pay for in-home care
How care is paid for depends on each person's circumstances, eligibility and the type of support they need. Safe at Home works with individuals and families using several different payment options.

Private pay for in-home care
Private pay gives individuals and families the flexibility to arrange in-home care based on their needs and schedule without relying on eligibility for a government program. Care can range from a few hours of help with everyday tasks to more consistent support at home.

Nebraska Medicaid and in-home care
Eligible Nebraskans may be able to receive in-home services through Medicaid Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) waivers. These programs are designed to help people who qualify receive care and support in their homes and communities rather than in an institutional setting.
Safe at Home provides approved services for individuals participating in Nebraska’s Aged and Disabled (AD) Waiver and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Waiver. Eligibility and the amount and type of care authorized are determined through Nebraska Medicaid and the individual’s service planning process.
Can a family member be paid to provide care?
In some situations, yes. Nebraska Medicaid allows certain family members to be paid for providing approved care to an eligible loved one. This can allow a person to receive care from someone they already know and trust while the caregiver receives pay for the work they provide.
For spouses and parents of minor children, Nebraska's Legally Responsible Individual (LRI) Personal Care service may allow payment for qualifying extraordinary care that goes beyond the support a spouse or parent would ordinarily be expected to provide. Eligibility, approved services and authorized hours are determined through Nebraska Medicaid and the individual's service planning process.
Safe at Home is an approved LRI provider and works with eligible families to employ the family caregiver and provide the support required through the program.

Veterans benefits for in-home care
Eligible veterans may be able to receive assistance with in-home care through U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs programs. The VA’s Homemaker and Home Health Aide Care program can provide help with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, personal grooming, eating and mobility, helping veterans continue living safely at home.
Eligibility and the amount of care provided are determined by the VA based on the veteran’s needs and whether the service is available in their area. Veterans or their families can talk with their VA social worker or care team to learn what services may be available.
Could VA benefits help with care at home?
The VA offers home and community-based services for eligible veterans who need help with everyday activities. A VA social worker can help determine eligibility and available services.
